This
is often what nursing home and assisted living residents face every
day.
Because of the rapid growth of nursing homes in the late 1960's
and early 1970's, Project Compassion was organized as a Christian
ministry in 1972 (and incorporated in 1982) to respond to some
vital but unmet needs of the nursing home residents. The first program
developed under agency founder Rev. Edward H. Einem was the one-to-one
volunteer visitation program.
Since then, Project Compassion 's services have
expanded to address many other needs specific to nursing home
residents, especially the agony of separation from family and community
and the loss of personal identity and purpose. Hundreds of volunteers
have been trained in the work of bringing much joy, comfort and
new hope to residents. In the early 1990's a chaplaincy program
was developed in which Project Compassion chaplains serve at nursing
care and assisted living facilities on a fee basis.
